From October 28, 2026, Meta is switching on a setting called product browsing for ads that are already running — and most advertisers haven’t even noticed the notice yet.
If you run Facebook or Instagram ads for your business, this change can quietly redirect your ad traffic away from your website. Here’s exactly what’s happening, who it helps, who it hurts, and how to opt out if it’s wrong for your business.
What Is Product Browsing?
Right now, when someone taps your ad, they go where you sent them — usually your website or landing page.
With product browsing turned on, tapping your ad may instead open an in-app product page inside Facebook or Instagram. The person sees your product details, price, and suggested similar items — all without ever leaving Meta’s app and without ever reaching your website.
Meta says an experiment run in August 2026 across roughly 117,700 advertisers showed an average 3% lift in conversions. That sounds nice — but remember, that’s an average across every type of business, measured by Meta, on Meta’s own pages. It says nothing about what will happen in your ad account.
Why This Matters More Than It Sounds
1. You lose website traffic. The click you paid for may never reach your site. That means fewer page views, fewer add-to-carts on your own store, and less data for your other marketing.
2. Your Pixel sees less. If people browse products inside Meta’s app instead of your website, your Meta Pixel and analytics record less of the journey. Over time, weaker data means weaker optimization.
3. You lose control of the experience. On your website, you control the offer, the upsells, the trust signals, and the checkout flow. On Meta’s product page, Meta controls the layout — and it can show suggested items, which may include products that compete with yours.
4. It turns on by default. This is the most important part: Meta is enabling this for existing ads automatically. If you do nothing, it applies to you.
Who Should Keep Product Browsing ON?
This feature isn’t bad for everyone. Consider keeping it (or testing it) if:
- You run Advantage+ catalogue / sales campaigns with a clean, up-to-date product feed
- Your products sell well on quick, frictionless browsing (low-ticket e-commerce)
- Your website is slow or poorly optimized for mobile — Meta’s in-app page may honestly convert better
If that’s you, don’t switch it off blindly. Test it on one campaign, compare results for a week, and let your own data decide.
Who Should Opt Out?
Turn it off if any of these sound like you:
- You run lead generation or WhatsApp campaigns — you need the conversation, not an in-app catalogue detour
- Your money is made on your website: bookings, quote forms, checkouts you control
- You rely on Pixel data and retargeting to make your funnel work
- You’re a service or local business where the “product page” doesn’t represent what you actually sell
For most service businesses and lead-gen advertisers I work with, my recommendation is simple: opt out first, test later if you’re curious. A default you didn’t choose should never quietly rewrite your funnel.
How to Opt Out (Takes 1 Minute)
You can change this setting at any time — it’s not permanent either way:
- Go to Ads Manager and open the ad you want to change
- In the ad-level settings, find Advantage+ Creative and Destination settings
- Locate the product browsing option and switch it OFF
- Repeat for your other active ads (or check the notice Meta sent your ad account — it includes an opt-out option)
Pro tip: After October 28, spot-check your top campaigns. Settings like this have a habit of appearing in new ads too, so build it into your launch checklist.
The Bigger Lesson
Product browsing is one of several changes Meta is rolling out this month — AI-edited ads, AI landing page tests, and new ad terms taking effect October 30. The pattern is clear: Meta is moving more of the customer journey inside its own apps.
That can be good for convenience. But advertisers who don’t audit their settings regularly will slowly lose traffic, data, and control without noticing. Check your settings this week — it takes five minutes and protects the funnel you built.
FAQs
Is product browsing already live on my ads?
It switches on for existing ads from October 28, 2026, unless you opt out. You can check or change it anytime in the ad’s Advantage+ Creative and Destination settings.
Does opting out hurt my ad performance?
There’s no penalty for opting out. Meta’s claimed 3% average lift comes from its own test across all advertiser types — your results depend entirely on your business model and funnel.
Can I turn it back on later?
Yes. The setting can be changed at any time, per ad. Opting out now doesn’t lock you out of testing it later.
